The Cheong Thong waterfall is located right at the entrance of the Lamnam Nan National Park in Phrae and is a very nice day trip location. Per scooter or car it is about 45 minutes away from downtown Phrae.

The park itself is huge (999 square kilometres) and connects also to Uttaradit province. It contains various waterfalls, viewpoints and small villages which are all worthy of a visit. If you are into biking or hiking, this is for you. I will cover several more attractions of the park later in this blog.

The entrance of the park and the waterfall. Note that the trip up to the national park is an event for itself as you will pass some beautiful nature.

Entering the waterfall as a tourist will cost you 40 Baht, 20 per person and 20 for your bike or car. As I come here at least once a month I got used to checking if I have some 20 Baht bills with me.

Once you enter the park, the waterfall is to your right after 200 meters or so.

A nice small walk will bring you to the waterfalls. Cheong Thong is actually not one big waterfall but a series of smaller falls which you can climb up as much as you like (more about this later). The easily accessible areas are the first 3 waterfalls:

These areas are absolutely beautiful, if you like cold water bring your swimwear as some pools are very inviting.

After the last waterfall above there is a natural border which is hard to pass. Theoretically if you follow the waterfalls further you will end up 4 hours later in Ban Na Tong a beautiful little village in the mountains. However I strongly advise you to go on your own. I did this hike some time ago with some local guides which I hired in Ban Na Ton. The hike itself is stunning but it is absolutely isolated and if you go alone nobody will find you if you have an accident. Also you need to be really fit as the trek contains of 4 hours of climbing up various waterfalls and hiking up mountains.

Here are some impressions:

Ban Na Tong can also be accessed by road of course and would be a great next location for your trip, the drive is also absolutely amazing.
